Hands are sweaty, heart is racing and my mind is trying to focus through the anticipation. “Right this way Mr. Combs” someone says but I can barely hear them due to the fact that my ears are ringing with excitement. The walk down the long hallway flashes by, I turn the corner into a small meeting room and there he sits, a mentor to millions of people, a global icon, a man who has help shape organizations large and small, a true legend, a Godly man or as he states “simply a man”.
I reply with some ideas, “That’s good” he responds “keep after it!” I ask a couple of questions of my own about what truly inspired him, started him down the path of self development, building his salesmanship skills set and his true gift of helping others realize the greatness within themselves.
He mentions a couple of key things that he learned early on from the individuals that inspired him to be the best that he could be. “First” he says “Be a man of your word”, my momma always told me “if you say you’re going to be there at 9 be there at 9 not 9:01. Next, the more you can help others achieve the more you will achieve yourself".
The conversation continued for several minutes. At the end, I realized and confirmed several important things about my life and those individuals that had helped mold me into a better man and person. It is a funny thing meeting a mentor and having the ability to sit a take a moment to reflect on how their thoughts and words of inspiration have created milestones in your life. You are truly humbled by the experience, knowing that you are just one of millions that this person has touched. As we closed Zig gave me a couple of nuggets that I will pass on 1) Always carry a pen or two, 2) Always carry a notebook with you (I already do both) 3) Have the faith in yourself and God that you can and will make a positive mark on the lives of others. Time to go . . . Feelings of deep gratitude and inspiration fill my head and heart, just seeing the way this 84 year old icon, still as busy as ever, carries himself, loves his wife of over sixty years, shares his tremendous faith in God and how he treats a common stranger like myself with graciousness and kindness. Handshakes all around, we part our separate ways and I feel like conquering the world . . . Thank you Mr. Ziglar, thank you.
