Appreciating the greatness within – A moment with Zig Ziglar

Posted by Vendere Team on Tue, Apr 5, 2011 @ 13:04 PM

Life is made up of moments in time that shape our lives. These events can produce emotions such as joy, sadness, excitement, anger, fear and love. Some of these events are even life altering – setting you on a different path allowing you to approach life in a whole different manner.

Hands are sweaty, heart is racing and my mind is trying to focus through the anticipation. “Right this way Mr. Combs” someone says but I can barely hear them due to the fact that my ears are ringing with excitement. The walk down the long hallway flashes by, I turn the corner into a small meeting room and there he sits, a mentor to millions of people, a global icon, a man who has help shape organizations large and small, a true legend, a Godly man or as he states “simply a man”.
I walked over to a small round table where he is sitting, intentlyZig-Ziglar-Speaking signing books.  My friend introduces me, we shake hands and he asks me to join him for a few minutes and I reply “what a pleasure it is to meet you”.
As I sit down I think - what am I’m going to say, I had it all planned out. The questions and comments I had scripted seem to be arbitrary and really not that important . . . and then he spoke, “Jeffrey, let me ask you this, have you written a book?”  What a great ice breaker, here is Zig Ziglar, an author who has numerous books on the New York Times Best Sellers list, asking me if I have written a book.  “The reason I ask” he states . . . “if each individual did that, they would open themselves up creatively and start to realize that they have a voice”.  Just 30 seconds into the conversation and he is already teaching, opening me up and allowing the conversation to take shape, truly amazing.

I reply with some ideas, “That’s good” he responds “keep after it!” I ask a couple of questions of my own about what truly inspired him, started him down the path of self development, building his salesmanship skills set and his true gift of helping others realize the greatness within themselves.

He mentions a couple of key things that he learned early on from the individuals that inspired him to be the best that he could be. “First” he says “Be a man of your word”, my momma always told me “if you say you’re going to be there at 9 be there at 9 not 9:01. Next, the more you can help others achieve the more you will achieve yourself".
Zig continues describing a situation when he was a young man. “I was six years old at the time. I was outside mowing our lawn when a neighbor of ours came out and said what a great job I was doing. She then asked me if I could help her by mowing her lawn after I was done.” Zig paused for a moment and then continued “Sure, I can do that. Once I finished my lawn I went next door and mowed her lawn to the very best of my ability”. With excitement in his voice he said “See, I have always believed that if you’re going to do something, do it to the best of your ability, go beyond the expectation of others and they will always look at you in a favorable light!” After he completed the mowing he knocked on the door, and asked her “Please come out and check the lawn to make sure I did a good job. If there is anything I missed, I will fix it.” Mr. Ziglar then asked me “You know what happened next?” He then stated “She paid me double!!” He paused for a moment, looking down at the books he was signing; Selling 101 and then stated “It was then, that very moment, I knew I was going to be a very successful salesman”.

The conversation continued for several minutes. At the end, I realized and confirmed several important things about my life and those individuals that had helped mold me into a better man and person. It is a funny thing meeting a mentor and having the ability to sit a take a moment to reflect on how their thoughts and words of inspiration have created milestones in your life. You are truly humbled by the experience, knowing that you are just one of millions that this person has touched. As we closed Zig gave me a couple of nuggets that I will pass on 1) Always carry a pen or two, 2) Always carry a notebook with you (I already do both) 3) Have the faith in yourself and God that you can and will make a positive mark on the lives of others. Time to go . . . Feelings of deep gratitude and inspiration fill my head and heart, just seeing the way this 84 year old icon, still as busy as ever, carries himself, loves his wife of over sixty years, shares his tremendous faith in God and how he treats a common stranger like myself with graciousness and kindness.  Handshakes all around, we part our separate ways and I feel like conquering the world . . . Thank you Mr. Ziglar, thank you.

Zig-Ziglar-Today“Some people are so focused on climbing the ladder of success they forget to investigate before they start climbing.  They get to the top of the ladder and realize the ladder was leaning against the wrong wall the entire time.”

I am truly inspired by organizations that believe in and implement personal development of everyone in their entire company, from the front line employee to the executive management. That was one of my main criteria I utilized when selecting Vendere Partners as a company to be involved with.
